2006 Cathedral Installation
FOTOFEST AT DIVERSEWORKS ARTSPACE – 1117 East Freeway / 713-223-8346 / Artists Responding to Violence /The Sound of Silence – Alfredo Jaar March 10-April 15 / Mon-Sun Noon-6pm / Opening March 10, 2006 6-8pm
Urban Cathedral was conceived while traveling on I-10 heading east at the beltway 8 interchange that offers a simple elegance with its massive symmetry and the traffic jams in the middle of the afternoon… I started to think about time, timing, location, god, bad radio music and road rage….So I picked up my camera and started to play with the idea. Once the show was scheduled at DiverseWorks the installation started to develop with a fairly rigid interpretation of a cathedral, transept, nave, apse, and pulpit… structural elements…. Somewhere along the line … the idea became more playful, more provocative of what an Urban Cathedral might be…. I knew there needed to be green space, unique light sources, photographic patterns and some sort of homage to the freeway exchange…. I would like to thank DiverseWorks for the opportunity to explore this idea…Jason Makepeace and John Walker for their help in construction. I would also like to thanks everyone at Art Attack for their timely help from their graphic department and QUE Imaging for the miracle 36 hour turn around on the Duratran prints. Most of all, I want to thank my wife Christa and daughter Clara for selflessly providing me with time to be an artist.
